Popularly called by his initials FPJ, The Philippines’ King of Action Movies had an early initiation in the field of cinema through his actor father Fernando Poe, Sr.. Still, he had to start out as a stuntman in several action movies before starring in his first lead role in the movie Anak ni Polaris and officially becoming a blockbuster movie star in the film Lo Waist Gang. Many of his films became such big pop-culture influences that their popularity continued to capture the hearts of the Filipino audience through several remakes. The most recent proof of this had been the success of the television adaptations of Ang Panday and Ang Probinsyano. On top of his popularity and box-office success, FPJ was also lauded for his acting abilities in the films Mga Alabok ng Lupa, Asedillo, Durugin si Totoy Bato, Umpisahan Mo, Tatapusin Ko and Muslim Magnum .357. He also directed nine of his movies and produced many other under his own film outfit FPJ Productions. His last film was Pakners, which also starred 9-ball billiards champion Efren “Bata” Reyes. Fernando Poe, Jr. ran for the position of President of the Philippines during the 2004 presidential elections. He died the same year at the age of 65, and was posthumously declared a National Artist of the Philippines for Film in 2006.
