Gretchen Barretto was launched as one of the teen stars in the Regal Films hit 14 Going Steady. She later shed off her tweetums image when she joined Seiko Films and lead its roster of ST (“sex trip”) Queens by top-billing the skin flicks Tukso, Layuan Mo Ako!, Ama, Bakit Mo Ako Pinabayaan?, Lumayo Ka Man Sa Akin, and Bakit Ako Mahihiya? Gretchen took a long hiatus from show business to take care of her daughter and only returned in the 90s to join ASAP as one of its regular hosts and performers. She eventually took a plunge back into acting in 2006 when she starred in the Metro Manila Film Festival entry Matakot Ka Sa Karma and a special episode in Maalala Mo Kaya, which earned her the Best Single Performance by an Actress at the PMPC Star Awards for TV. She also won her second Best Actress award from the PMPC after another challeging performance in the long-running ABS-CBN drama anthology. She topbilled her own primteime soap in 2010 with Magkaribal, which eaned her yet another Best Drama Actress award from the PMPC Star Awards, and later starred as Ashi Behati in the hit drama series Princess and I. She then made her Cinemalaya entry in the film The Diplomat Hotel and gave a remarkable performance in Star Cinema’s The Trial, for which she bagged Best Supporting Actress at the 2015 Gawad Tanglaw. Gretchen has also released two albums under Star Records, entitled Unexpected and Complicated.
